This opportunity is the result of slow-moving organizing with the only federal prison for women in the Prairies region: Edmonton Institution for Women (EIFW). We have already run two cohorts of a program entitled Tapestries of Transformation which have helped us form relationships with the women inside and the institution’s administration. The result of informal feedback was that the women were seeking opportunities to explore artistic endeavors, which has led us to plan for further arts-based activities.

In tandem with arts-based activities, we have also pitched karate lessons for the women as a way to engage in learning and physical activity, two things that are often hard to find inside. If this becomes a reality, a majority of the in-facility programming will be dedicated to that program.
